When thinking about publishing your own book, there are a lot of things that you need to consider. One of the first is your ISBN. An ISBN or International Standard Book Number is an identification number composed of 13 digits that identifies each book published on the market, no matter what the format, type, size, number of pages, or publisher.

Below are 3 of the most basic things that you need to know when dealing with ISBNs:

  1. What's an ISBN – Just as described above, ISBN's are composed of 13 digit random numbers. The implementation of having a 13-digit number started on January 1, 2007. Prior to then, ISBN's were composed of 10 digits.

  2. Is an ISBN necessary when publishing – Is it really important for an author-to-be to get an ISBN for their book? Well, it depends. There are some eBook publishing companies that do not require authors to have an ISBN. Additionally, if a publisher is selling their books on their own and are not trying to place them in bookstores or libraries or with wholesalers, ISBNs are not required.

  3. How to get an ISBN? – There are a lot of ways you can get ISBN for your book. One of the most common ways is through the self-publishing company you are publishing with as their publishing packages mostly include ISBN registration.
