Partridge India was recently introduced by Penguin Books India to offer the country’s writers even more opportunities to share their stories with the world. Established as India’s premier publisher, Penguin’s library features many of Indian literature’s most significant contributors, including Booker Prize-winners Arundhati Roy and Kiran Desai.

So to help Partridge India better explain the advantages of self-publishing, we turned to the very best source we could think of; Indian self-published authors. We invited authors to share their personal experiences and advice with Indian writers considering self-publishing their works. Their fascinating articles can be found on the Partridge India Blog.

Here are 5 of our favourite reasons why our guest authors chose to self-publish their books.

Self-publishing with Partridge India means you get your book released faster.

Amitabh Sengupta was inspired by his eleven years as a teacher in Africa. He learned a whole new approach to art that led him to conduct research into Indian folk art upon his return to his home town of Kolkata. He soon discovered India’s Potuas who, similar to Africa’s Griots, are travelling bards and storytellers who link the past and present with their tales relayed through various mediums. India’s Potuas use paintings and visual artistic expression, whereas Africa’s Griots use song and auditory cues.

Sengupta’s research and passion resulted in his book, Scroll Paintings of Bengal. After a long search he found an India-based publisher who agreed to publish his book.

Five long years later his book was still not published.

Determined to see his work in print, and with little likelihood of it happening through the traditional avenue, he turned to self-publishing. His decision was based on 3 counts.

First: “I did not want to carry on endlessly with the present situation, waiting for the Indian Publisher to print as my mind was fully involved with next writing.”

Second: “My computer was a safe haven, loaded with all materials of the new version: texts, collections of scrolls, which were re-photographed and scanned. So there would be no chance of losing materials when copies of files were to be e-mailed.”

Third: “I found the cost of producing a book in India, my book, with fifty colour plates and nearly two hundred pages of text would be far more expensive. So I decided to go ahead with [self-publishing].”

The result: “The book was printed, indeed, as they promised, in three months.”

eBook Self-Publishing Guide to Formatting

Various types of books, such as eBooks, Audio Books, or Paper Books, require their own formatting. In the case of eBooks, compatibility with different e-reading devices, like Kindle or Nook, must be considered.

The following is a simple 5 step eBook formatting guide you can use:
  1. Read the instructions/manuals - Whatever self-publishing company you are planning to publish your eBooks with, be it Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, or Partridge Publishing, take note and read the formatting guides and style they have as formatting differs from one publishing company with the other.
    .
  2. Use only one book editing tool – It is highly recommended by experienced authors to use only one book editing software, as using various types may cause issues with your book during printing and or issues with the formatting.
    .
  3. Optimize your images – Images used in your books are very unpredictable, unlike text which can easily be formatted and manipulated. Make sure the size of the image is optimized so that it isn’t stretched or pixilated too much when your book is viewed on larger screens.
    .
  4. Ensure the color compatibility – Make sure colored images or text are fully tested for compatibility with common eBook reading devices. Different devices render colors differently.
    .
  5. Use separate formats for separate devices – Give your readers options about what format they can buy or read your books in. Create separate book formats. May they be reading on their Kindle or Nook, they should be able to download the right format for their device.

Three Basic Things You Need To Know About ISBN

When thinking about publishing your own book, there are a lot of things that you need to consider. One of the first is your ISBN. An ISBN or International Standard Book Number is an identification number composed of 13 digits that identifies each book published on the market, no matter what the format, type, size, number of pages, or publisher.

Below are 3 of the most basic things that you need to know when dealing with ISBNs:

  1. What's an ISBN – Just as described above, ISBN's are composed of 13 digit random numbers. The implementation of having a 13-digit number started on January 1, 2007. Prior to then, ISBN's were composed of 10 digits.

  2. Is an ISBN necessary when publishing – Is it really important for an author-to-be to get an ISBN for their book? Well, it depends. There are some eBook publishing companies that do not require authors to have an ISBN. Additionally, if a publisher is selling their books on their own and are not trying to place them in bookstores or libraries or with wholesalers, ISBNs are not required.

  3. How to get an ISBN? – There are a lot of ways you can get ISBN for your book. One of the most common ways is through the self-publishing company you are publishing with as their publishing packages mostly include ISBN registration.

What are the common self-publishing pitfalls?

The new breed of aspiring writers often believes that the easiest path to being a published author is through self-publishing. But there are a lot of things they need to know especially the most common yet vital parts of self-publishing.

If you have the passion of being a writer and wants to impart your visions and imaginations to the world, then keeping yourself off from the following common mistakes is highly recommended:

  1. Goals and Milestones – It is important to have a clear vision of what do you want to achieve with your book. Oftentimes, having "money" as the center of a goal in publishing a book is a bad idea as authors tend to publish the book without checking thoroughly if the story and the quality of the book itself is good and have provided value to the readers. Although, having "money" as one of the goals is not at all a bad idea as long as the authors will still provide an informative and valuable literary piece.

  2. Ask Help. Hire People – No man is an island – this is true when you are self publishing as you need all the help you can get. You can't do all the tasks needed in self publishing by yourself. Hire people if possible especially when it comes to copy editing and book cover designer.

  3. Social Media Marketing – While social media is still free, you can actually abuse its power by creating and participating in the top social networking sites. Spread the news about your book and about yourself. Participate in any author blog forums, communicate, and engage with other authors.

Above are just few of the common self publishing pitfalls that authors tend to do. There are still a lot of these mistakes that you need to know by reading and joining in author discussions and conversations.
